Swimming Pool Safety Tips

Presentation1

To continue our blog series on the dangers of swimming pools, this week I will be giving tips on how to maintain a safe environment in and around your swimming pool. According to the Red Cross over 200 children drown in backyard swimming pools each year. This number is alarming, however you can help to prevent by following these steps.

  • If you have an in-ground pool, surround your pool with at least a 4-feet high fence or barrier with a self-latching gate. If you have an above ground pool , make sure you have a gate that locks and keep it locked when you are not in the pool.

  • Make sure children are under supervision at all times. Stay in arms reach of younger children. Have unexperienced swimmers wear a life jacket.

  • Enroll everyone in your home into an age appropriate swimming class.

  • Maintain proper chemical levels, circulation and filtration in your pool. Test regularly and adjust the chemical levels to lower the risk of rashes, infection or illnesses.

  • Establish rules for your pool such as no diving, no running, swim with a buddy, etc.

  • Keep toys away from the pool when they are not being used. This will reduce temptation from children to go near the pool when an adult is not around.

  • Do not put electrical appliances near the pool or in the “splashing zone” of the pool.

  • Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings.

If anyone is injured while swimming in your pool, contact your insurance agent right away to report the injury. Your personal liability coverage or your homeowners policy will respond for a claim involving bodily injury or property damage.
