Reduce Clutter and Help Others
Most of us don't think of giving year round. We may feel more generous around the Holiday seasons or when the weather gets a little colder, but other than that, we don't spend much time thinking about it. It is a wonderful thing to give during the Holidays, and yes I admit that I am more prone to giving more during these times of the year. I am challenging myself, and you, to not put "giving" into a time frame or season. Instead let the "spirit" of giving be a year round event.
This is the perfect time to give, actually. What are a lot of us doing right now? Organizing and making room for new things that we may have received as gifts over the holidays. We are right smack dab in the middle of the winter doldrums, and are perking ourselves up by cleaning out closets, basements, cabinets and more. We made a New Years Resolution to get a grip of the clutter and we are going to stick to it!
Great! So what are you doing with all the "stuff" you are purging. If you are like me, most of it is in great condition, you just realize you don't use it, didn't want it, and just don't have the space for it. I know! Give it away! There are so many local charities and organizations that have a huge need for such items. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Living Room: clean out the extra fleece throw blankets you don't use but hoard in a blanket basket (even though you use the same one and never even take out the others). Collect DVDs that you don't watch anymore and books. Shelters would love to take these items!
Kitchen: Do you have some gently used small appliances like blenders or coffee pots? Maybe you got a new dishware set and don't know what to do with the old set? Wondering why you need 3 colanders when you only ever use 1? Shelters and organizations that help get people back on their feet into their own place are looking for these items! Church groups are a great place to look also!
Bedroom: Do you have a closet full of clothes that you are just hanging on to even though it would take an act of God to actually fit into them again? Put them in a bag and say goodbye! Bless someone with a cozy sweater! It will do more good than just hanging in a dark space. Maybe you have some boots and shoes you don't need. Maybe suits of the husbands or work clothes of yours could help someone who needs some professional attire.
Use this time of cleaning and organizing to bless others! Don't limit your giving to a season. Do it from the heart whenever you can!
