Finally!! I think it is safe to say that winter is behind us and summer is on its way! Winter leaves behind memories of snow and cozy sweaters but it also leaves us with another parting gift - potholes!
These little menaces to society are horrible. I think we have all made the wincing face when we hit a bad one and didn't see it coming. The face that says "if my car drives after hitting this it will be a miracle." There are few things about driving I despise more than hitting a pothole.
Another reason a pothole can be so destructive is the potential damage to your vehicle they can do. You are riding along minding your own business and WHAM you now have a blown out tire and damage to the undercarriage of your vehicle.
Fortunately auto insurance can offer relief to those who have an extensive amount of damage to their car due to a pothole situation. Optional collision coverage pays for a collision with another car, object or even as a result of your car flipping over. Though coverage on potholes may vary depending on the insurance company, your deductible will ultimately determine whether or not your pothole damage is covered.
Collision coverage is usually sold with a $500.00 deductible, which means if the damage is greater than $500.00 the amount over $500.00 is what can be submitted to the insurance company. The most common damage due to a pothole is to the tires, which likely will not exceed your deductible, so here are some ways to avoid the potholes all together!
- Don't tailgate. We know that tailgating is bad for a number of reasons, but when you are riding too close to the person in front of you, you can't see the potholes until it is too late!
- Check for traffic before swerving around a pothole. This may seem like common sense, but so many people just quickly go around and never look to make sure there isn't someone else coming.
- Go slow! If there is nothing you can do to avoid hitting the pothole, then drive over it very slowly. Hitting a pothole at high speed greatly increases the chance of damage to your automobile!
